Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s),

It was fantastic to welcome the students back on Monday. The quiet of the corridors has returned to the normal hum drum of school life. Mr Copeland’s weekly newsletter is keeping you all well informed about the current events and next week with the Tanzania Movie Night on Tuesday I look forward to meeting many of you.

On Monday last I held an Assembly with the year. This was to talk about the subject choices being made at present and also to inform students that on Thursday 16th March they will have a great opportunity to talk with current 5th year students about the subjects. Teachers of every subject area will also be on hand to answer any questions. I am hopeful that this will help further in making the decisions around subject choices. Every student is also offered a meeting with myself or Mr O’Connor to review the aptitude tests and to talk around subjects on offer. The website www.curriculumonline.ie has the subject specification for all subjects offered at Leaving Certificate. It is also a good idea to look at past exam papers on www.examinations.ie before making final choices.

The Junior Cycle Appeals results have arrived in the school this morning. Our school secretary Ms Edel Kirwan is sending them out in the post today so you should receive these by Monday. There was a long delay in them coming through but now they have arrived let the focus move fully towards entering the Senior Cycle and choosing the subjects that best suit the abilities of students.

A big welcome to the students arriving from Boston for their return exchange. In the next few months our students will be making a lot of trips abroad including the Camino from May 24th to May 29th and the Tanzania trip also in May. There will be a number of activities happening here too for students to ensure that as we move into the final phase of Transition Year something for everyone will happen.

Mr Doolan and myself are currently working on a Mystery Trip for parents and friends on a Saturday or Sunday towards the end of April / start of May, so you might start thinking about that and whether you would like to come with us for an afternoon of fun and an opportunity to meet each other again informally. A guided tour with a few surprises thrown in while raising some money for the Tanzania Spiritan community will start off the summer season well.

Further details coming soon!

A reminder that the new App for noting absences is up and running and thanks to those availing of it so far. It is the easy way for you to input any absence onto the system. However if you prefer feel free to email me either.

Congratulations to all students in the Year who are representing the College in many areas from football to swimming to athletics to debating and a particular mention to those TY students who were narrowly defeated yesterday in the SCT semi final. A fantastic performance from all the panel.

Well done also to Senan Wall for completing his Freezebury challenge and raising €1,581 of his €1,000 goal: One minute every day for the month of February to raise awareness on men’s mental health for Mental Health Ireland.

Please note that under no circumstances must a student leave the school during the school day without prior notice having been given to the school. It is really important that you send a note in advance of any absence or partial absence.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy St Patrick’s Day and do not forget that you can purchase Shamrock grown by the prisoners in Mountjoy being sold here in the school in aid of the Tanzania fundraising.

If I can help on any matter please drop me an email.

Regards

Liam Hogan

4.5 Retreat, 15th March

Just a quick reminder that 4.5 have their retreat next week, 15th March.

All students from 4.5 meet at 8:45 AM sharp outside Mr. Doolan's Office (Chaplaincy Office). Return to school for 1PM.

Students will need their full uniform, lunch and fare for DART to Pearse Street Station and return to STMC.

There is also an important Waiver Form from the retreat team leader (Annita Phelan - I Am Retreats) to be signed by parent(s) / guardian(s). It is necessary for your son to bring this signed document with him to school asap in order to go on the retreat.

A printed copy has been given to each student. However, there is also a digital copy attached here should you need it.

Many thanks for your support

Mr Oliver Doolan

Subject Choice Event, 16th March

School will end on March 16th at 14:20 pm for all years except TY to facilitate a TY Subject Choice afternoon in the Assembly Hall. The idea is that TY students will talk to 5th year students about their subjects to help them make subject choices before the 22nd March.

All subject coordinators have been asked to get 2 students in their subject area to represent the subject and also to have at least one teacher from their Department present with the students on the 16th so all questions can be answered. We are looking forward to this event and thank you in advance for your cooperation. Please ask Liam who is coordinating the event if you have any questions.
