Beirut Explosion Appeal

TY Hoodies on Sale

We are raising funds for NGOs working in Beirut through the sale of this new TY hoodie.

One of the nicest things about being a teacher is that you witness moments of generosity that are so natural and open you are often reminded of just how effortlessly kind people are.

On asking TY Reps about a cause they would like to help support, it was agreed quickly that we should help those picking up the pieces of their lives after the giant explosion in Beirut.

Some weeks ago Mr Kelleher was contacted by past pupil (2006) Tony Clery. We had shared his message with TYs and the fundraiser through the sale of hoodies is our first response:

"I'm reaching out as I know St Michaels has always prided itself on charity work over the years and how its alumni have helped those less fortunate. I wanted to ask if the school would do anything to support a cause close to my heart? Earlier this summer I married my wife, and relocated to her home country, Lebanon, where we planned to settle for a few years, start a family, before returning to Ireland when the children were ready to start their education.

6 days after our wedding, the city blew up in a catastrophic explosion. My wife and I were 500 meters from the epicentre, and our entire home was decimated along with the city of Beirut. We were fortunate enough to be able to relocate back to Ireland, and restart our life in Bray. But hundreds of thousands in Beirut were not so lucky.

For context, I’ve attached a map of Dublin to show the scale of damage had it happened here. As well as a picture of the explosion and a marking where our apartment is (and where my wife and I were at the time).

Since then I have been filled with survivor's guilt and done as much as I can to help raise awareness & donations for the NGOs there helping the people of Lebanon. A couple of examples: Irish Time Article - https://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/middle-east/i-m-lucky-to-be-alive-irish-citizens-describe-beirut-explosion-1.4322946 RTE interview the day after the explosion - https://www.rte.ie/radio1/ray/programmes/2020/0805/1157532-ray-darcy-wednesday-5-august-2020/?clipid=103465294

I know that each year St. Michaels do a number of fundraisers, whether through the Transition Year students or the entire school in general.  I wanted to ask you if there was someone in the school I should speak to, about the relief work in Lebanon being amongst the benefactors of some of the schools fundraisers this academic year? If so, I'd be more than happy to suggest which organisations in Lebanon to donate to and even come into the school, to speak to the students/fundraisers about the experience of surviving the blast, the aftermath and how their help would go a long way."

Our photo shoot was coordinated by Danny Morton who spent his week's Work Placement with Morgan Agency stylist, Jan Brierton.

Max Connell and Garrett Hannon took time out of their work on the TY Mural to do a spot of modelling...as you do!

Both Garrett and Max are wearing a SIZE Medium
