4.4 RE Retreat
Thanks to Mr Doolan and Anita for leading the retreat
On Thursday 17, 4.4 had a special retreat day visiting four churches in Dublin City Centre. The retreat day was called A Pilgrim Path and was facilitated by our guide, Anita Phelan. It was a day to take timeout to experience the quietness and stillness of some of Dublin incredible religious buildings.
The day started in St Paul’s Church of Arran Quay, where Eamon de Valera was married. The church was built in 1835, during the early phase of Catholic Emancipation in Ireland. The church has not functioned for over 10 years as a Catholic Church, but it hosts the St. Gregrorios Jacobite Syrian Christian Church on Sunday of each week.
We then moved to St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral on Marlborough Street for our second church. It was first consecrated in 1825, it has had a big history with Daniel O’Connell and Irish Nationalism. It has also been the setting for major events. The late Gay Byrne RIP had his funeral mass here in November 2019.
After lunch we visited two more churches. St. Teresa’s, Clarendon Street, and Church of Adam and Eve on Merchant’s Quay. These are two gems of Dublin City centre. Only footsteps from the hustle bustle of busy city life are these two sanctuaries, offering peace and tranquility to all who ventures in. The Church of Adam and Eve, which is an incredible Franciscan Church tucked away from Merchant’s Quay has a magnificent ceiling with its walls displayed in a serene duck egg blue. Here, the sacristan Raphael treated us to own own private viewing of relics of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Andrew.
An incredible day. Thank you to all for organising.
Photos Mr Doolan.
And finally thanks to the TY Reps for their study of how staff & students are moving through the school. They have been counting, tracking, tracing and keeping a diary of how we are moving and dealing with the new Covid 19 physical distance arrangements. Looking forward to next steps in making things intuitive and safer going forward.
STMC Physical Well being Week
Tuesday, Start 9:00am
We're asking all STMC to think about how they can get active outside their regular schedule. So if you're not doing it already please consider walking or cycling to and from school.
All TYs will be taking part in a walk to and swim at the 40 foot this Tuesday. Please wear PE gear, towel and togs (best to have togs already on under track suit). Make sure to bring a warm outer layer for after the dip!
Departure times from school:
9:00am 4.1
9:30am 4.2
10:05am 4.3
10:45am 4.4
11:30am 4.5
STMC Sessions are back!
A note from Mr Sheridan:
New music is being produced at STMC Studios all the time. More than 130 tracks have been produced by our students over the last 8 years! If you would like to join our musical journey on spotify simply search “STMC Sessions” and hit the follow button.
We are delighted to mention our first release of the year. 6th Year student Dylan Wallace does a fantastic cover of “Piano Joint” by Michael Kiwanvua. You may not have heard this tune before, but you will definitely want to hear it again…The release date for Dylan’s track is Friday 25th Sept.
Make sure to select the link below and then click ‘Follow’ on our STMC Sessions Spotify page, to hear all of our latest releases this year.
Feel free to share with family and friends and encourage them to follow us too.
TY Thursday (Contingencies being planned)
As you are aware, further restrictions have/will come into affect today and we are doing our best to make sure that they are safely observed in the context of the Dept of Education Framework to maintain Physical Distancing in the Classroom in Post Primary Schools with a Full Return of All Students for the 2020/21 School Year.
We are currently in line with the recommendations on this even with activities out of the school grounds. The issue is that some (eg St Patrick's Rowing Club) of the organisations running programmes may not be able to continue to host us until restrictions loosen.
I will update all TYs ASAP early next week on contingency arrangements.
For now (bar Rowing) the planned Thursday activities remain unaffected:
Work Placements Oct 5-9th
We are aware that some of you are experiencing difficulties securing Work Placements:
Currently we have organised
2 places in Tara Buildings
2 places in GOAL
1 place with a photographer who will be working with a TY in organising a shoot around the new TY hoodie. Proceeds of Hoodies sales will go to charity.
We are currently working with the PPU to explore the possibilities of WP provided by past pupils.
We won't leave anyone stuck!
TY Dublin City Scavenger Hunt
Clues to be shared Saturday, 1pm
The competition involves orienteering the city in a team of 3 TYs to visit 25 Dublin popular tourist/historical/cultural sights. TYs are only allowed travel by foot, bike (taxi is not permitted). This is a great opportunity to get to know the city a little better.
We'll begin the 1st round Saturday and challenges will be sent to all TYs who have completed the relevant forms.
Good Luck!
Leinster Schools Debating Cup.
This competition is open to all Senior Cycle students and our school has been represented in it for many years.
Debating teams are made up of two students each, who must write and deliver a persuasive argument on a motion against a team of two from another school. As well as being a great way to represent the school in prestigious competition, it is also a fantastic way to improve your English!
Within the competition there is also a tournament for "novice teams", where both students have little to no experience of debating. This means that even if you've never done it before, you'll be debating against students with a similar level of experience to you! If anyone would like to know more or register an interest in taking part, please get in touch with me and I'll set up a meeting next week. Please get in touch with Mr. Molloy for further details.
Early Morning Swimming
Early morning swimming commenced yesterday Thursday 17th.
It will run Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 7.45am.
Limited to 6 students per session.
