The Big Sleep Out

Thursday 4th February

Thanks to everyone who signed up so far.

Will you dedicate a night of your time to show solidarity with those who are homeless?

The Covid-19 pandemic is taking a heavy toll on people in our community.

Covid-19 pandemic puts people who are homeless at risk disproportionate risk – not only are they more likely to have underlying health issues, they are unable to follow the key recommendations –wash your hands regularly, stay at home and keep a ‘social distance’ from other people.

We want to raise awareness of these issues that are still a major factor in the lives of some of our most vulnerable community members.

TY SYMC will be sleeping out* in unison to offer a display of solidarity with those experiencing homelessness and displacement on Thursday, 4th February.

TY Reps will be talking to you about the next steps for the week ahead.

This week's TY challenge will also revolve around this event.

There will be prizes for pictures of the best back garden campsites

*You're going to need a tent!

Zoom Introduction with Eco-UNESCO:

2pm, 1st Feb

Weekly course runs:

Every Wednesday

Deadline 3pm, 29th Jan

This will not clash with Employment skills as you will be able to complete these in your own time throughout the week

Do not underestimate this course & what it will mean to future college or job applications. Sustainability & resilience are (rightfully) practices that all governments & organisations are prioritising today & into the future.

During the programme participants will attend weekly workshops. By the end, of the workshops participants should:

Have an understanding of Sustainable Development from local to global,

be familiar with the Sustainable Development goals,

be introduced to the idea of Peer Education,

be introduced to the idea of active and global citizenship.

Towards the end of the programme, participants will begin to think about their Action Project. The overall aim of the project is to empower young people to become active citizens, to build awareness of environmental and social issues in their locality and improve their community and local environment.

After the weekly programme, participants can choose to do a QQI Level 5 qualification in Peer Education. This course builds on the skills and knowledge that the young people have already gained from their participation in the YSD programme. The course will also support the participants to acquire a general knowledge of peer education for sustainable development, build confidence and gain planning, facilitation, research, communication and presentation skills. The course is 50 hours in total consisting of 37 input hours, and 13 work experience hours, for which their ongoing participation in the weekly meetings counts. The QQI Level 5 gives substantial knowledge and confidence to those participants who are interested in eventually becoming Young Leaders.
