Hospice Coffee Morning

Thank you for all your support last Tuesday for the STMC Coffee Morning in aid of the Irish Hospice Foundation.

TYs were a credit to themselves and students from the whole school enjoyed snacks and drinks throughout the day.

A special thanks to all of you who volunteered, managed to drop in, baked and donated raffle prizes.

We had too many cakes for the day but we were able to donate those to the Homeless Contact Work that evening so they all went to a good cause!

A special thanks to the PA Reps Judy and Tanya for all there work.

***Tupperware and cake tins can be collected from my office up until 8th November***

TY Tuesday, 5th November:

Dreamspace & Toastmasters

We'll be visiting Dreamspace, Microsoft for a second time when we return to school after the midterm with another group of 40 TYs. We will be leaving the school at 1:15 and returning at 5pm. Lunch will be provided on arrival.

Simon Scriver will also be visiting the school to talk with the boys about how to speak in public. Simon is a World Finalist Toastmaster who has also been Irish, UK and European Champion Toastmaster.

This talk will take place in the Lwr Study, 1:35 - 3:35, 5th November.

TY Reps Present:

HALLWAY CRAZY GOLF!

This week, I asked students what they would like to see addressed in TY planning. Many had asked for more activities that were more active and fun outside Tuesday afternoons.

So, after a meeting with the TY Reps, we'll be organising a series of fun and active lunchtime activities for the rest of the year.

This November, a series of "4 Balls" will be organised to take part in a Ryder Cup-style Crazy Golf Tournament in the TY Corridor.

We are currently asking for design ideas for the course:

  • Designs should be quick and easy to put down and take-up

  • Credit will be given for ideas that are Imaginative quirky and fun

  • A €20 voucher prize will be given for any designs chosen

Crosscare Drugs and Alcohol Mentoring Scheme

Thanks to the 28 TYs who signed up to take part in the Crosscare Drugs and Alcohol Mentoring Scheme.

Crosscare will train up TY students in how to speak with younger people about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. TYs will speak with 1st year students and 6th class students about their experiences and how to avoid dangerous situations etc.

The course takes place on Wednesday during period 3, starting on 13th November, and TYs will then speak with 1st year students after having completed the course.

- Mr Joyce

Greta Thunberg & St Michael's College

Congratulations to Salim Kajani and Fridays for Future Ireland on being selected to accept the Dublin Lord Mayors Award last week on behalf of Greta Thunberg.

Salim has been an active member of the Fridays for Future movement over the last year.

Any students who would like to get involved can talk to Salim or me. STMC students are currently tasked with running online communication through the SCAN.ie website.

Make Yourself Heard Podcasting Competition

The competition is open to all 4th and 5th year students, in schools, community groups, and other youth organisations in the Dublin 4 area.

The competition is completely free to enter and take part in, and offers 5 shortlisted winners the chance to learn all about audio production, record in a professional podcast studio, and have a pilot episode produced. The prize for the ultimate winner will be a series of podcasts produced and hosted by the HeadStuff Podcast Network.

The Competition Details

All participants will be required to submit a completed Podcast Pitch Template and an MP3 audio file (maximum 3 minutes), containing a short trailer for the proposed show.

All the details of what should be in the audio and pitch are on the template form. This form can be downloaded here. It is also available from my office.

  • Students (in teams of 1-5 people) will fill out their proposal and submit it, along with an accompanying 3-minute audio sample.

  • Closing date for entries is Friday 6th December.

  • HeadStuff will review all proposals and pick a shortlist of 5. These 5 groups will be invited to spend an hour in Headstuff studios, with the Headstuff team, learning how to record in a studio, and making a pilot episode.

  • The 5 pilot episodes will be edited by us and then judged by Headstuff. All shortlisted teams will receive an edited final version of their show.

  • The winning show will be announced and join the HeadStuff Podcast Network, where they will have a series of ten, 30-minute episodes produced and released on the network.

Marie Keating Foundation Talk & Bag Pack

Thanks to our volunteers for all their hard work last week in helping te Marie Keating Foundation raise funds for their much needed good work.

TYs attended a presentation on Cancer Awareness this week. Here's what the presenter and Oncology Nurse, Liz McEvoy:

"Hi Aaron,

Many thanks for booking MKF yesterday.

I have to reiterate how attentive the boys were yesterday. They were extremely helpful cleaning up at helping me out to the car. Such a large group can be challenging at times but they were a pleasure to deal with.

Pass on my compliments."

121 Digital

Please note the change of date for 121 Digital. It will now commence on the 12th November.

We have been struggling to find learners to match up with TY teachers: if you know of any older family members, friends or neighbours who would like a little help with their digital devices please let them know about us:)

TY Film Club Gaisce and the Irish film Institute

A quick note to mention that the Film Club will start on the 12th of November.

Also, any TYs interested in film can work with the IFI as part of their Community Participation in the Gaisce Award. TYs will be able to attend a number of schools screenings and events as part of a course in film and visual literacy. Activities will revolve around research, writing and reflection.

Activity Week 1 - WP Evaluations: Groups 1 & 4

Thanks to all the TYs who have completed their WP Evaluations.

I am still waiting on a number of students to complete their forms that were sent out to each student through Google Classroom.

Please note that (as was stated at the beginning of the year and Parent s Night), evaluation forms - as well as project submissions, attendance, behaviour etc - will play a part in the selection process for TY trips and activities.

Be sure to check that the WP Evaluation has been submitted.
