Spanish Exchange
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Each year here in St. Michael’s College we facilitate an exchange programme for
Transition Year students to Spain. We link up with two different schools. The first is
Colegio El Armelar in Valencia and the other is Colegio Santa Teresa in Alicante.
These are both mixed schools who similarly organise exchanges for their female
pupils to the Teresian School. We invite a number of their students to spend three
weeks here in St. Michael’s and they, in turn, invite our students to spend three weeks
in their respective schools in Spain.
There are no fees attached to this exchange programme. The only costs incurred by
each family are the return flights to Spain and spending money for your son. There
will also be costs associated with hosting the Spanish exchange student (food etc).
It is important to note that the role of St. Michael’s College is to facilitate the
exchange programme. It is the role of the host families, both here and in Spain, to
organise further extracurricular activities and weekend trips. The host family is
acting in loco parentis.
Numbers on both exchange programmes are limited. We usually send no more than
6 students to each school but this number may be lower, depending on what suits
each school. Demand for the programme varies each year.
It is important to highlight that students are not selected based on academic ability,
rather their attitude to their studying of Spanish and their overall behaviour and
conduct in St. Michael’s College.
The dates for this year’s programme are yet to be confirmed but we aim to host the
Spanish students here around November / December time and our students will
travel to Spain in early Spring.
We ask families who are interested are to email Ms.McKay (omckay@stmc.ie) so we
have an idea of numbers. Once the dates have been finalised parents and students
will be notified.
Kind regards,
Orlagh McKay

'PROGRESS IN AN UNCERTAIN WORLD'
Right in the centre of Brussels, this week has been one of the highlights of the TY for many students. A real challenge that (in my opinion) is one of the best school experiences you could hope to take part in.
This is an excellent opportunity for students to work on their critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, networking skills and public speaking skills at a high level.
Numbers are very limited this year. Academic grades will count towards selection.
Any student interested should fill out this expression of interest form HERE
Homeless Contact Work
Thanks to the first group of TYs for all their work and good spirits last week. An hour and half spent working and talking with some of the many homeless in Dublin. Thanks to Salim for his short reflection on his experience below:

The Homeless Contact Work that took place on Tuesday was a real eye-opener. Six TYs including myself met at Trinity College at 6pm, and not five minutes later did a homeless man approach us for tea. When we were out on the street and were actively looking to engage people, I truly saw the conditions that many live in. And it’s evident, that most of the people on the street had some type of addiction or mental illness. Attending the session showed me the reality of living on the street, that you’re living hour by hour, and meal by meal. It felt good serving the homeless food/drinks, and definitely something worth doing again.
FIFA Tournament

Another great event coordinated by TYs. A big thanks to all the reps for organising consoles and managing the groups.
